About Us

Iptron Technology’s journey began in 1983 under Numeritech (Pty) Ltd, founded by Ian Plunkett, a visionary in the field of conveyor tension control. The company was officially transferred and incorporated as Iptron Technology cc in 1991, marking the beginning of a remarkable technological odyssey.

In the early 1980s, the company made significant strides with the development of its first EGT-2000 Automatic Tension Controller and the 6TH-120 Tension Load Cell in 1982. During this initial phase, approximately 150 of these pioneering systems were supplied to the market, establishing Iptron’s initial reputation for innovation.

The late 1980s saw another breakthrough with the creation of the CLLC-80 in 1988, recognised as the world’s first 2-Wire 4-20 mA Loop-Powered Tension Transducer. By 1995, the company had refined its technology, redesigning the EGT-2000 into the incredibly reliable EGT-2420 controller. This new iteration was a significant success, with around 600 controllers supplied globally.

At the turn of the millennium, Iptron began manufacturing its electronics and load cells in-house, demonstrating a commitment to quality and technological control. In 2000, they started assembling their own Winch Panels to further improve product quality and reliability.

The 2010s marked another pivotal moment with the development of the EGT-28AX Dynamic Tension Controller, specifically designed for Variable Speed Control and Large Conveyors. This controller’s first system achieved an impressive feat of continuous 24/7/365 underground operation for six years, showcasing the company’s technological prowess.

In March 2024, Iptron underwent a significant ownership transition. The company, previously wholly owned by founder Ian Plunkett, was acquired by Thato Lethunya and Sam Ditsele.

This transition maintained the company’s Level 1 B-BBEE status and commitment to South African manufacturing.

Technological Philosophy

Ian Plunkett’s extensive research and development have been crucial to Iptron’s success. His reluctance to retire stems from a deep commitment to continuing technological advancement in the conveyor tension control industry.
